Bonefishing in Miami's Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys is considered one of the best areas in the world to target Big Bonefish. Our average size bonefish is about 8 pounds and have been caught up to 15 pounds. In South Florida, anglers can catch bonefish all year long, with the peak season in the Spring and Fall months. The bonefish like water temperatures that are between 72-82 degrees. During the summer, it can get so hot that bonefish may only feed on the flats during the early morning hours and again later in the day when the sun is not as strong. During the winter months, bonefish have a tendency to gather in large schools and cruise the dark colored grass flats where the heat is held better much like when wearing a dark colored t-shirt in the hot sun. |

The Bonefish in South Florida can be targeted while using live shrimp or crabs with a 10 pound light tackle spinning outfit or by using 8 weight fly rods with various fly patterns. Typically guides prefer putting their clients on Bonefish by either chumming or by stalking. We always prefer to Hunt, Stalk, Sightfish, or Pole the flats for the fish because we feel this is the true sportsman way of catching them. We will warn you though, this technique is much harder and requires patience, keen eyesight, and a accurate cast to be able to hook one. But once you do hook one, hold on for the fight of your life because they are known for running nearly 100 yards before they ever slow down. Bonefish are considered a Catch & Release species here in South Florida and most of the world. We always take every precaution to make sure that each bonefish we hook will survive to fight another day. It has been found that each bonefish in the South Florida area has an economic impact of $70,000. This statistic, which was provided by University of Miami's Bonefish & Tarpon Conservation and Research Center, has motivated many local fisherman to do their part in making sure these species will be around for many years to come. In fact many local guides, including Angling Adventures, participate in the Bonefish census and tagging programs, which we report back to the scientists so they can study and learn more about the species. |
