About Tarpon Fishing
|
The most exciting fish we target on the flats and in the backcountry is the Tarpon. (Megalops Atlanticus) This is because they are known for long drag screaming runs and acrobatic jumps out of the water. Tarpon fishing in Miami and pretty much all of South Florida can be done all year long. However, the best months to target them is clearly during the Spring Tarpon Migration which generally is between March - August. The peak of the season is end of April to the begining of June. If you are planning a trip not during our "Tarpon Season" it is still possible to target Tarpon just not in as many numbers as seen during Spring. During the winter months the weather in South Florida can be 85 Degrees or 35 Degrees. These are the months that are really hit or miss for Tarpon. If it's warm we can get on some really nice fish big and small but if it's cold and or windy it's best to fall back on Snook and Redfishing.
Tarpon Fishing = Caught All Year Long Big Fish Best Months = Migration = April , May, June 60-100 LBS Fish = June, July, August Juvenile Tarpon = 1 - 30 LBS = July - December Winter = December - March = Based on Temps.
Tarpon can be targeted a number of different ways. The begining Tarpon Anglers should choose to target Tarpon using either Live Bait or even Artificial Lures depending on the area and how the fish are feeding. This will increase their chances to catching a "Silver King." Usually when an angler becomes more advanced and has put many under his or her belt they choose to step up to Fly Fishing for Tarpon. This is a whole different kind of challenge and really takes on the title of "Sport Fishing." We really encourage everyone to start with the basics rather than take on the most difficult style first. This will not only help you become a better fisherman but also increase your chances of even hooking one of these great species of fish.
Tarpon Fishing Styles = Live Bait, Lures, Fly Fishing Gear Used = Light Tackle Spin or Bait Casters 10-20 lb 5-12 Weight Fly Rods
Our philosophy on Miami Tarpon Fishing is pretty basic. We want you to catch fish and learn as much as possible during your trips with us so you become a better fisherman. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions while on your trip. Tarpon fishing is constantly a learning process no matter if it's your 1st trip or your 100th you should be able to pick something up each time you try it. Tarpon Fishing is purely for Sport and all fish are caught and released unharmed. If you catch a nice fish we would be glad to take a picture for you. If you would like to have a mount made we can even recommend a great taxidermist.
